WhatsApp Introduces NewsPasskeys for Secure, Password-Less Sign-Ins
WhatsApp is introducing a new feature called 'Passkeys,' initially exclusively available on Android devices. According to the X platform (formerly known as Twitter), Android users can securely log in using Passkeys, which offer an alternative to the traditional username and password combination. Passkeys enable users to unlock their WhatsApp accounts using their facial recognition, fingerprint, or a PIN. This method enhances security and mitigates vulnerabilities associated with traditional logins. The roll-out of Passkeys will occur gradually over the next few weeks and months, with no confirmation yet regarding its availability on iOS devices.
The concept of 'Passkeys' presents a modern approach to login authentication, reducing the reliance on traditional credentials like usernames and passwords. By requiring users to utilize facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN, WhatsApp adds an extra layer of security to the login process. This new approach not only increases security but also necessitates a user's physical presence for account access, making it substantially more challenging for malicious actors to compromise accounts.
Passkeys were previously under beta testing within the company, as reported by The Verge. Stay tuned for updates as this feature becomes accessible to Android users in the coming days.
