Tushar Gandhi Alleges Brief Detention on Route to Commemorate Quit India Day

Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and a notable author and activist, claimed that he was detained by Mumbai Police on Wednesday while en route to commemorate Quit India Day. The incident took place as he was leaving his residence to participate in a silent march at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan. The march, intended to honor the historical significance of Quit India Day, was apparently perceived by authorities as a "threat to law and order."

Tushar Gandhi shared his experience on Twitter, expressing his astonishment at being detained at Santa Cruz Police Station. He noted that this marked the first instance of such detention in the history of Independent India. He drew parallels to his great-grandparents, Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi, who were also arrested by British police on the same day during the colonial era.

Although an official statement from the police is pending, Tushar Gandhi responded to queries from Twitter users, explaining that the planned silent march was deemed a potential disruption to law and order.

Gandhi further affirmed his commitment to the cause by stating that once he is allowed to leave the police station, he will proceed to August Kranti Maidan to honor Quit India Day and its martyrs.

The significance of August 9 lies in its observance as Quit India Day, commemorating the initiation of the Quit India Movement. On this date, the Indian National Congress passed a pivotal resolution demanding the British exit from India.
