Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra faced expulsion from the Lok Sabha following a heated debate on cash-for-question allegations. The expulsion decision was reached after Moitra was denied an opportunity to speak during the debate, despite the Trinamool's request to designate her as the party's spokesperson for the discussion.
Following the voting, which favored Moitra's expulsion, the Trinamool leader addressed the media outside the Lok Sabha, reading a prepared statement. Emphasizing her perception of the proceedings as a "kangaroo court," Moitra vehemently denied any evidence of cash involvement and highlighted the lack of a fair hearing for Darshan Hiranandani by the ethics committee.
"There was no evidence of any cash, any gifts anywhere. The recommendation of expulsion was solely based on the complaint that I shared my login. But there is no rule whatsoever in this regard," asserted Mahua Moitra.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, announcing the decision, stated, "...This House accepts the conclusions of the Committee that MP Mahua Moitra's conduct was immoral and indecent as an MP. So, it is not appropriate for her to continue as an MP."
The ethics committee's report, advocating Moitra's expulsion, was swiftly tabled on Friday, culminating in the prompt removal of the West Bengal MP. Both the Congress and the Trinamool sought additional time to thoroughly review the report.
The cash-for-question allegation against Mahua Moitra remains a central point of contention, prompting a rigorous debate on parliamentary ethics and due process. The unfolding developments are poised to trigger further discussions on the intricacies of such allegations within the political landscape.
