TMC MP Mahua Moitra's Ethics Committee Meeting Erupts into Controversy
BJP MP Vinod Sonkar, head of Lok Sabha's Ethics Committee, accuses Mahua Moitra of using "unparliamentary" language in a meeting to record her oral evidence on the cash-for-query scandal. Opposition MPs, including Danish Ali, walk out, calling the questions "unethical.
BJP MP Vinod Sonkar, the chairperson of Lok Sabha's Ethics Committee, accused TMC MP Mahua Moitra of using "unparliamentary" language during a meeting called to record her oral evidence in the cash-for-query scandal. This allegation follows Opposition MPs, including BSP's Danish Ali, walking out of the panel's meeting with Moitra, claiming that the questions asked were "unethical." Sonkar stated, "The committee's motive was to probe into the allegations of unethical conduct by Mahua Moitra. Instead of cooperating, Mahua Moitra, in a fit of anger, used bad words against the panel and its chairperson." He added that Opposition MPs unethically leveled allegations against the committee and walked out to avoid answering questions.
Aparajita Sarangi, a BJP MP and a panel member, emphasized the confidential nature of the committee's proceedings and condemned Moitra's behavior. She stated, "The conduct of Mahua Moitra was condemnable. She used unparliamentary words for our chairman and all the members of the committee." Opposition members walked out, accusing the chairperson of asking Moitra "unethical questions." Congress MP N Uttam Kumar Reddy called the questions "undignified and unethical."
Giridhari Yadav, a Janata Dal (United) MP, mentioned that personal questions were asked of Moitra, which they deemed inappropriate. Nishikant Dubey claimed that the Opposition couldn't accept that a Scheduled Caste person had become the chairperson of the panel. Moitra appeared before the panel and defended herself, stating that she had not violated parliamentary rules and that the cash-for-query charge was made as a result of her breaking personal relations with advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai. The charge against her involves accepting gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for using her parliamentary account.
