Reliance Jio Ventures into AI with Bharat GPT: Akash Ambani Unveils Ambitious Plans

Reliance Jio, India's leading telecom and streaming giant, is expanding its footprint into the realm of artificial intelligence with the upcoming launch of Bharat GPT. The announcement came from Reliance Jio Chairman, Akash Ambani, during his participation in the annual Techfest at IIT Bombay.

Akash Ambani emphasized that Bharat GPT is a collaborative effort between Jio and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, marking a significant move for the telecom giant into the field of AI.

"We have been working on a project with IIT Bombay to launch the Bharat GPT programme," revealed Akash Ambani, adding that this initiative would reshape the company's trajectory by integrating AI technology across all sectors.

Ambani outlined the company's vision, stating, "We are working very hard to launch AI not only as a vertical inside our organization but horizontally across all our sectors."

Bharat GPT is poised to usher in a new era for Jio, impacting various segments within the company and extending its influence into broader societal sectors. Ambani projected that the next decade would witness the prominence of large-language models and generative AI, with Bharat GPT at the forefront of Jio's technological advancements.

In detailing the potential contributions of Bharat GPT, Ambani elucidated that Jio aims to leverage AI developments across media, commerce, communications, and devices. Additionally, he unveiled plans for the introduction of Jio's proprietary operating system for televisions.

"We have been working on our own OS (operating system) for a while now for TVs, and we are comprehensively thinking about how to launch it," disclosed Ambani, indicating Jio's commitment to innovation beyond AI.

While the release timeline for Bharat GPT remains undisclosed, it is anticipated that Jio will unveil this transformative AI project in the early months of 2024. Ambani dropped a tantalizing hint about Jio 2.0 but refrained from providing further details.
