Reliance Jio Introduces SpaceFiber at India Mobile Congress

Akash Ambani, the Chairperson of Reliance Jio, conducted a demonstration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the inauguration of the three-day India Mobile Congress (IMC). On this occasion, Reliance Jio unveiled JioSpaceFiber, India's inaugural satellite-based gigabit broadband service.

Ambani emphasized that JioSpaceFiber would empower people everywhere to fully engage in the emerging digital society by providing gigabit access to essential online services like government, education, health, and entertainment.

He also mentioned that this innovative technology would significantly expand their coverage to include millions of individuals who were previously unconnected.

Here's an overview of JioSpaceFiber:

  1. Satellite-Based Network: JioSpaceFiber, as the name suggests, is a satellite-based internet network. Its primary objective is to bring high-speed broadband services to areas that were previously inaccessible. This service complements Jio's existing offerings, including JioFiber and Jio AirFiber.

  2. Strategic Partnership: For this ambitious project, Reliance Jio partnered with SES, a Luxembourg-based satellite communication provider. It will leverage SES's O3b and new O3b mPower satellites.

  3. Cutting-Edge Technology: Through these satellites, Reliance will harness the latest in medium earth orbit (MEO) technology to strengthen mobile backhaul capacity. This expansion enhances the reach and scalability of Jio's True5G network, even in remote areas.

  4. Regulatory Approval: In September 2022, Jio Satellites, a unit of Reliance Jio, received approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to offer high-speed broadband-from-space services, as reported by the Economic Times.

  5. Initial Availability: Jio SpaceFiber is already accessible in four of India's most remote locations: Gir (Gujarat), Korba (Chhattisgarh), Nabarangpur (Odisha), and ONGC-Jorhat (Assam). It will soon be accessible nationwide at competitive prices.

This groundbreaking service is set to transform the digital landscape in India, providing high-speed connectivity to previously underserved regions.
