Prayagraj Resident Appeals to PM Modi for the Return of Stolen 17th Century Jade Terrapin from British Museum
The jade terrapin artefact

Reshadul Islam, a history enthusiast from Prayagraj, is urging the British Museum to repatriate a unique artefact that he claims was 'stolen' from India. In an email addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Reshadul is requesting the PM to approach his British counterpart for the return of a 17th-century jade terrapin sculpture, a relic discovered during the 1803 excavation of a cistern at Allahabad Fort.

Crafted from a single piece of jade stone (green nephrite), the jade terrapin currently resides in a corner of the British Museum in London. Reshadul, a hakim by profession and a dedicated researcher, is determined to restore this historical artefact to its country of origin.

The jade terrapin, measuring 20 cm in height, 48.50 cm in length, and 32 cm in width, with a weight of 41 kg, was taken to England by Lieutenant General Alexander Kyd in 1803. Subsequently, it came into the possession of Kyd's family, and in 1830, Thomas Wilkinson, a relative, presented the relic to the British Museum.

Expressing his astonishment at the artefact's journey from Sangam city to England, Reshadul emphasizes its cultural, historical, and religious significance. Turtles, symbolizing intellect, good luck, and prosperity and considered the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, hold special importance for the people of Prayagraj. The jade terrapin, crafted by artists from Prince Jehangir’s court in the 17th century, is modeled after a local turtle species found in the waters of Sangam.

In his letter to PM Modi, Reshadul underlines the artefact's importance and appeals for its return to Prayagraj, especially ahead of the grand Mahakumbh in 2025. He believes that the residents of Prayagraj would feel honored if the marvelously carved turtle were to be brought back to its place of origin before this significant event.
