10th Aug New Delhi: Final Stage of No-Confidence Motion Debate: PM Modi to Respond Today

As the no-confidence motion debate, initiated on August 8, enters its concluding phase, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the motion today. The motion, put forth by the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A.), has ignited a fierce exchange between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and the Opposition, focusing on issues such as Manipur violence.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh confirmed PM Modi's presence in the Lok Sabha for the response to the no-confidence motion, which marked the culmination of a high-stakes verbal confrontation between both sides.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who initiated the debate, underscored that the I.N.D.I.A. bloc's decision to bring forth the no-confidence motion was driven by the intention to break Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'maun vrat' (vow of silence) regarding the Manipur violence. He accused the government of creating a division within Manipur, with distinct experiences in the hills and the valley.

In response, Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the Opposition for introducing confusion through the motion, stating, "The purpose of the no-confidence motion is only to spread confusion. They are neither farmer-friendly nor poor-friendly nor backward-friendly. They are not worried about anyone except their family."

Despite the impending voting at the end of the debate, the ruling BJP-led NDA government is expected to remain unscathed due to its comfortable majority in the Lower House. With 331 members, including 303 from the BJP alone, the government's majority surpasses the required mark of 272.

In contrast, the I.N.D.I.A. bloc holds 144 MPs, a tally that could rise to 152 with potential support from BRS. Notably, Naveen Patnaik's BJD, with 70 MPs, has abstained from backing the motion.

The Opposition's strategic move, although slim in its chances of success, aims to win the 'battle of perception' by compelling PM Modi to address the Manipur issue in the context of the no-confidence motion.
