Zerodha's Chief Executive Officer, Nithin Kamath, shared a deepfake video of himself on Wednesday, shedding light on the escalating concerns surrounding the growing menace of deepfake technology. Kamath emphasized the increasing difficulty in distinguishing between real individuals and AI-generated replicas as deepfake capabilities continue to advance.

Expressing his apprehensions on social media platform X, Kamath highlighted the standard procedure employed by businesses during customer onboarding, which involves verifying identity or address proof through platforms like Digilocker or Aadhaar. He underlined the current reliance on webcam verification to match a customer's face with their ID proof, foreseeing challenges as deepfake technology evolves.

"As deepfakes improve, I believe it will become progressively more challenging to verify whether the person on the other side is genuine or AI-generated. This issue is particularly pronounced for banks adhering to stringent regulatory requirements during onboarding," Kamath remarked.

Speculating on the potential impact of evolving regulations, Kamath remarked, "It will be interesting to see how the regulations around this evolve. Reverting to traditional methods of account opening could halt the growth of the entire sector abruptly." To cap off the revelation, Kamath stunned his audience by disclosing that the person featured in the video was not him but a deepfake.

Deepfake Menace Recognized at the Highest Levels The deepfake threat has garnered attention at the highest levels of government, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi repeatedly expressing concerns about the challenges posed by deepfakes and other risks associated with artificial intelligence.

"Deepfake is a challenge for the whole world... AI tools falling into the hands of terrorists are also a significant threat. If terrorist organizations acquire AI weapons, this will have a huge impact on global security... We need to plan how to tackle this," stated Prime Minister Modi.

Last week, a Supreme Court judge, Justice Hima Kohli, echoed these concerns, describing the emergence of deepfake technology as groundbreaking but also raising alarms about privacy invasion, security risks, and the spread of misinformation. Justice Kohli emphasized the potential of deepfake technology to create highly realistic content and its implications for privacy and security.

Celebrities, including Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, and Alia Bhatt, have already fallen victim to deepfake videos circulating on the internet, further emphasizing the urgency of addressing the challenges posed by this rapidly advancing technology.
