NCERT Forms 35-Member Committee for Social Science Curriculum Development

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced the formation of a 35-member committee tasked with developing syllabi and teaching-learning material for History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, and Psychology classes ranging from 6 to 12.

This committee, known as the Curricular Area Group (CAG): Social Science, is chaired by Michel Danino, a visiting professor at IIT-Gandhinagar. It serves as a continuation of the 19-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC), initially notified in July. The NSTC's primary responsibility is to finalize the curriculum, textbooks, and learning materials for these specified classes.

The NCERT notification highlighted that the CAG: Social Science would coordinate with the Preparatory Stage CAG and other CAGs as necessary to ensure continuity with Grades 3-5, interdisciplinary connections among subjects, and the integration of cross-cutting themes in Social Science.

To facilitate vertical and horizontal linkages and integration across disciplines in Social Sciences, the CAGs for Social Science and Economics will collaborate by sharing and discussing drafts of materials prepared with each other.

Key members of the committee include Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India, Banabina Brahma, Associate Professor at the Department of History, Kokrajhar Government College, Assam, MD Srinivas, Chairman of the Centre for Policy Studies in Chennai, and other distinguished professionals in the field.

The deadline for submitting Handbooks for Teachers to NSTC and NCERT is set for February 25, 2024. NCERT has already released the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for school education, and the NSTC is working to finalize textbook content based on this framework, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
