Maruti Suzuki, India's foremost car manufacturer, is poised to enter the electric vehicle (EV) market with the unveiling of its inaugural all-electric SUV, the 'eVX.' Set to roll off the production line at the Hansalpur factory in Gujarat, operated by Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Ltd, a subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki, the eVX boasts a 60 kWh battery pack, offering an impressive 560-kilometer range. Production is scheduled to commence in the fiscal year 2024-2025, following a significant investment of ₹3,100 crore and an MOU with the Gujarat government to boost EV manufacturing.
Maruti Suzuki, India's leading car manufacturer, is set to venture into the electric vehicle (EV) market with its first all-electric SUV named 'eVX.' The production of this electric vehicle will take place at the Hansalpur factory in Gujarat, operated by Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Ltd (SMG), a fully-owned subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki. The senior company official, Rahul Bharti, Executive Director of Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, revealed this information during a press briefing in Ahmedabad.
The production of the eVX is scheduled to commence in the fiscal year 2024-2025. To accommodate the manufacturing of the EV, a new production line or plant will be seamlessly integrated into the existing setup of SMG's factory in Hansalpur, which currently houses three plants.
The eVX is equipped with a 60 kWh battery pack, providing an impressive range of approximately 560 kilometers on a full charge, according to Bharti.
In a significant move towards EV manufacturing, SMG, in March 2022, inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government, committing an investment of ₹3,100 crore in the Hansalpur plant for the production of electric vehicles.
The world premiere of Suzuki's EV concept model, the eVX, took place at the Maruti Suzuki Pavilion during the Auto Expo 2023 in Delhi in January. This marked Suzuki Motor Corporation's debut in the electric SUV segment.
Bharti also shared that SMG reached a production milestone of 3 million cars at the Hansalpur plant on December 4. Commencing operations in February 2017, the facility achieved this cumulative production figure in approximately 6 years and 11 months. Notably, the last one million units were manufactured in just about 17 months.
The Gujarat facility, with an annual production capacity of 750,000 units, plays a crucial role in meeting both domestic and international demand. Bharti highlighted that 50% of all cars exported by Maruti Suzuki have originated from the Hansalpur facility, showcasing its significance in the company's global supply chain.
