Trinamool Congress member Mahua Moitra expressed her pride in being the "first person to be unethically expelled by the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee," following its recommendation for her expulsion in the "cash-for-query" matter. Moitra took to social media, denouncing the process as a "kangaroo court" and criticized the committee for recommending expulsion before seeking evidence from the government.
In a now-deleted post, Moitra commented, "Never Waste a Good Crisis they say... - this just helped me double my 2024 winning margin." The Ethics Committee, chaired by BJP's Vinod Kumar Sonkar, recommended Moitra's expulsion with a 6-4 margin.
The committee's 479-page report accused Moitra of accepting money and various facilities from businessman Darshan Hiranandani, sharing login details with him to raise parliamentary questions. It further alleged that 50 of her questions aimed at protecting Hiranandani's business interests.
Opposition members criticized the "prejudiced" recommendation, calling for Hiranandani's deposition before the panel. Preneet Kaur, a suspended Congress parliamentarian, voted in favor of the expulsion recommendation, aligning with the ruling dispensation.
