Intruders Spark Chaos in Lok Sabha on Parliament Attack Anniversary: Eyewitness Accounts Unfold
In a shocking incident that unfolded on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, two individuals breached security measures by jumping into the Lok Sabha from the visitors' gallery. The daring act triggered a massive security scare, with Members of Parliament and security personnel swiftly apprehending the intruders and handing them over to the Delhi Police for interrogation.
Details about the motives and identities of the intruders remain scant, leaving many questions unanswered. Eyewitnesses, primarily MPs who were present during the commotion, shared their accounts of the incident.
BSP MP Ram Shiromani Verma revealed that security personnel discovered an Aadhaar card with a Lucknow address on one of the intruders. Describing the chaotic scene, Verma stated that the entire parliament chamber was engulfed in smoke as one of the men released yellow smoke from a canister. MPs reacted by subduing and handing him over to security.
Verma also noted that the intruders were chanting the slogan "tanashahi nahi chalegi" (down with dictatorship). Furthermore, he disclosed that one of the individuals had concealed a canister and a paper inside his shoes.
MP Hanuman Beniwal, who was among the first to apprehend the intruders, recounted the moment when one of them emitted smoke from an item taken out of his shoe. The Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, assured that the Delhi Police is conducting a thorough investigation, revealing that the initial findings suggested the emitted smoke posed no harm.
Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, involved in apprehending the intruders, described the incident as a major security breach. He recounted snatching an item emitting yellow-colored smoke from one of the intruders' hands and throwing it outside.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not present in parliament during the incident. BJP MP Rajendra Agarwal, who was presiding over the Chair of Speaker at the time, noted the moment when the intruders, initially thought to have fallen, raised suspicion as the second person attempted to open his shoes, releasing smoke.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram expressed concern over the breach, emphasizing the seriousness of the security lapse, especially on the significant date of December 13, commemorating the 2001 Parliament attack. Chidambaram highlighted that the intruders, both around 20 years old, carried canisters emitting yellow smoke and attempted to reach the Speaker's chair, raising alarms about the potential toxicity of the smoke.
