Intel Collaborates with Indian Manufacturers to Boost Laptop Production

Intel, a global technology giant, has announced a significant collaboration with eight electronics manufacturing services (EMS) companies and original design manufacturers (ODMs) aimed at enhancing laptop manufacturing in India. In an official release, Intel has committed to sharing its expertise and supporting the production of entry-level laptops within the country.

The collaboration includes well-established entities such as Dixon Technologies, Bhagwati Products, Kaynes Technology, Optiemus Electronics, Panache Digilife, Smile Electronics, Syrma SGS Technology, and VVDN Technologies. Through this partnership, Intel aims to facilitate the growth of India's electronics manufacturing ecosystem and strengthen the nation's presence in the global value chains.

Intel will play a pivotal role by leveraging its advanced surface mount technology (SMT) lines and assisting the partner companies in establishing robust quality control processes for components. Additionally, they will work to establish benchmarks for finished goods, ensuring that the laptops meet high-quality standards.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for Electronics and IT, expressed his satisfaction with global organizations like Intel contributing to the growth of the electronics manufacturing sector in India. He noted that collaborations with companies of Intel's caliber will enable Indian electronic manufacturers to expand their presence as trusted players in the global value chains.

For Indian contract manufacturing firms entering the laptop manufacturing sector, partnering with Intel holds immense value. It provides them with valuable insights and expertise, helping them better understand the intricacies of the laptop manufacturing business. Many of these companies have also submitted their applications for the IT Hardware PLI (Production-Linked Incentive) scheme, indicating the growing interest in domestic manufacturing.

Santhosh Viswanathan, Vice President, and Managing Director of Intel India, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in aligning with the "Make in India" initiative. He highlighted that enabling the entire laptop manufacturing process, from surface mount technology assembly to the finished product, not only supports the initiative but also contributes to the technological progress of the nation.

In May, the Indian government announced the revised IT Hardware PLI 2.0 scheme, with an allocated budget of Rs 17,000 crore, aimed at boosting local manufacturing in India. This initiative is expected to result in an incremental production worth Rs 4.7 trillion over a span of six years. While 40 companies have applied for the scheme, the government is yet to announce the list of approved applicants.

Intel's partnership with Indian EMS and ODM companies is a significant step toward strengthening the country's position in the electronics manufacturing sector, aligning with the government's "Make in India" and PLI initiatives. It not only bolsters local manufacturing but also promises to elevate the quality and standards of laptops produced in India.
