Intel Announces Layoffs at Folsom R&D Facility: 235 Employees Affected
Intel Corporation is set to implement its fifth round of job cuts in 2023, with 235 employees facing layoffs at the company's research and development facility in Folsom, Sacramento County. The semiconductor giant disclosed this information through an official regulatory filing, specifying that the layoffs are scheduled to commence on December 31 and will span a two-week period.
In a statement provided to various media outlets, Intel, headquartered in Santa Clara, outlined the strategic measures being taken to accelerate its objectives and reduce costs. The company indicated that the layoffs are part of broader initiatives encompassing business and function-specific workplace reductions. Moreover, Intel hinted at the possibility of additional workforce adjustments in 2024.
This latest round of layoffs follows the elimination of 549 positions at Intel's Folsom campus earlier in the year, constituting approximately 10% of the total workforce. The Folsom facility is integral to Intel's research and development endeavors, covering a spectrum of activities such as the development of solid-state drives (SSDs), graphic processors, software, and chipsets.
Reports suggest that there may be further workforce reductions, with up to 20% of employees in Intel's client computer and data center divisions potentially facing job cuts.
California, the home state of Intel's Santa Clara headquarters, currently employs over 13,000 individuals across the company. This figure represents nearly 10% of Intel's overall workforce, which stands at 131,900. As Intel navigates these changes, the company aims to streamline its operations while staying competitive in the ever-evolving semiconductor industry.
