India and UK Discuss Free Trade Agreement and Global Challenges in Jaishankar-Cameron Meeting

New Delhi: In a pivotal meeting between India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the newly appointed UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron, discussions centered around advancing negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA) and addressing global challenges, including the Israel-Hamas conflict and the Ukraine war. This marked Cameron's inaugural meeting as foreign secretary following his surprise appointment by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a recent cabinet reshuffle.

Jaishankar conveyed his congratulations to Cameron on his appointment, expressing anticipation for close collaboration. While the specifics of the talks were not disclosed, Jaishankar mentioned that they explored ways to realize the full potential of the strategic partnership between the two nations. The ministers exchanged views on the situations in West Asia, the Ukraine conflict, and the Indo-Pacific.

A spokesperson for the UK foreign ministry highlighted the meeting's focus on progressing a free trade agreement and building partnerships in defense, science, and technology. The ministers also delved into shared global challenges, including the Israel-Gaza situation and Russia's actions in Ukraine.

The importance of the Indo-Pacific region for global growth and prosperity was underscored, along with a reflection on the strength of the UK-India relationship and the ambition of the UK-India 2030 Roadmap.

Notably, India and the UK have been engaged in prolonged negotiations on an FTA, with differences on key issues requiring intervention from the political leadership of both countries. Earlier interactions included Jaishankar's meeting with former Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, now the UK Home Secretary, addressing issues of mobility, skills, talent, extremism, economic offenses, trafficking, and security.

In a separate session with UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps, Jaishankar discussed enhancing defense and security cooperation, emphasizing opportunities for British partners through India's Make in India program. Another meeting with former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair covered bilateral ties, West Asia, and Africa.

India and the UK continue active engagement in reshaping their relationship to meet contemporary challenges. Earlier in November, Jaishankar and his wife extended Diwali wishes during a meeting with Prime Minister Sunak, emphasizing the warm reception and gracious hospitality received.
