Haryana Police Arrests Several Rohingya Refugees, Citing Solid Evidence

In the aftermath of the recent communal violence in Nuh district, the Haryana Police has taken action by arresting several Rohingya refugees for their alleged involvement. Nuh's Superintendent of Police, Narender Bijarniya, revealed that some of the refugees were identified as being part of the mob and engaging in stone-pelting during the July 31 violence.

The situation unfolded when the Rohingya refugees were found to have illegally occupied land belonging to Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran in Tauru, leading to a demolition drive. The police, armed with evidence, compiled a list of individuals suspected of participating in the violence, and subsequent arrests were made based on the collected information.

Sabber Kyaw Min, founder and director of Rohingya Human Rights Initiative, expressed concern over the unexpected demolition carried out with heavily armed forces, resulting in the displacement of refugees. While Min emphasized that the NGO would assist the police in case any refugee is found involved in illegal activities, he raised objections to the raids, citing they instilled fear and harassment within the community. Min stressed that refugees in the camps were engaged in modest livelihoods like rickshaw pulling, ragpicking, and selling vegetables.

The Rohingya are predominantly Muslim refugees from Myanmar who fled their homeland in the face of targeted violence perpetrated by the government in 2017. India is home to around 16,000 UNHCR-certified Rohingya refugees, with the government estimating the total Rohingya population residing in India to exceed 40,000, concentrated mostly around Jammu.

The recent demolition targeted Rohingya camps in Nuh's Tauru area, and the police identified suspects among the refugees allegedly involved in the previous violence. Over 50 illegal properties occupied by Rohingya individuals were identified across Nuh, leading to the demolition drive carried out with support from relevant agencies and police providing manpower and security.
