Mass Demolitions Raise Concerns in Nuh District Following Communal Violence

Allegations emerge as numerous property owners reveal that they were caught unawares by the Haryana government's recent demolition drive, with claims of no prior notice or information provided. This drive, lasting five days, targeted 1,208 structures, primarily owned by the Muslim community. Spanning 11 towns and hamlets, the campaign encompassed 37 sites across 72.1 acres.

The controversial initiative followed communal violence in the region which resulted in six deaths and 88 injuries. A contentious aspect of the demolition is its alleged discriminatory focus on properties belonging to a single community.

While government officials maintain the demolitions were conducted in response to various legal violations, including illegal encroachments on government and forest land, structures without occupation certificates, and unauthorized construction, critics argue that the process lacked transparency and proper notice.

The Punjab & Haryana High Court intervened, questioning the nature of the demolitions and temporarily halting them due to concerns of potential "ethnic cleansing." This intervention prompted further examination of the drive's justification.

The affected areas included Nuh, Nalhar, Punhana, Tauru, Nangal Mubarakpur, Shahpur, Aagon, Adbar Chowk, Nalhar Road, Tiranga Chowk, and Nagina. The incident stands out as one of the largest demolition operations in the region.

The Haryana government defended its actions, citing the involvement of multiple departments in identifying the properties for demolition. Despite claims of notices being issued, those whose properties were demolished contend they received no advance warning. Discrepancies and lack of transparency have fueled accusations of targeted actions.

The incident has triggered a broader conversation about the proper process for demolitions and the need to uphold fairness and respect for due process, regardless of the situation.
