In the wake of the recent viral deepfake video featuring actress Rashmika Mandanna, concerns about the perils of AI-generated morphed videos have prompted the Indian government to address the issue. The central government, recognizing the potential dangers posed by deepfakes, convened a meeting with various social media platforms operating in India.
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced that a comprehensive discussion on the existing laws governing deepfakes and their dissemination on social media took place during the meeting held on November 24. Chandrasekhar emphasized that social media platforms were reminded of their responsibility for internet safety and preventing the circulation of deepfakes. The platforms were instructed to regulate their content in accordance with Indian law.
In an interview with PTI, Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated, "On November 24, we had a detailed meeting with all of the (social media) platforms where it was made clear to them that the onus and responsibility to ensure that the internet is safe and there are no deepfakes - under the current law - is the responsibility of the platforms."
Chandrasekhar further emphasized that the government is prepared to take necessary steps, including removing the safe harbor protection, and enabling the prosecution of platforms that fail to adequately address the issue of deepfakes.
The government had previously announced its intention to appoint a special officer to investigate instances of deepfake content on social media and online platforms. This officer will be tasked with assisting citizens in filing First Information Reports (FIRs) regarding fake content circulating online.
The controversy surrounding the deepfake video involving Rashmika Mandanna ignited a larger debate on social media about the prevalence and risks associated with deepfakes. The fabricated video portrayed Mandanna walking inside an elevator while wearing a skintight black outfit, sparking outrage within the entertainment industry.
In response to the incident, central agencies have heightened their scrutiny of online platforms, urging them to take effective measures to combat the deepfake menace. The government's proactive approach reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety and integrity of online spaces, especially in light of the evolving challenges posed by AI-generated content.
