Google has made significant strides in the realm of technology that could potentially upgrade any true wireless earbuds with heart rate monitoring capabilities, sans the need for additional hardware. This breakthrough, detailed in a research paper titled 'APG: Audioplethysmography for Cardiac Monitoring in Hearables', introduces experimental tech that utilizes a low-intensity ultrasound probing signal transmitted through the active noise cancellation (ANC) system of the earphones or headphones.

The revolutionary tech involves bouncing the ultrasound signal off the wearer's ear canal and then using the onboard microphones to detect perturbations in the skin surface as the blood pumps. This methodology, termed Audioplethysmography (APG), is shown to be resistant to factors such as skin tone, ear canal size, and the material of the eartips.

In their study, conducted over eight months with 153 participants, Google's researchers found that the technology returned heart rate readings with a median error of 3.21% in all scenarios and reported 2.70% median error in interbeat interval (IBI) for heart rate variability.

While the tech shows promise, challenges remain, such as signal disturbances in noisy environments. Google's ongoing work involves utilizing multiple frequencies and advanced software to capture accurate readings, thereby enhancing its viability.

Despite the potential, the immediate availability of this technology in the market remains uncertain. Further testing and refinement are required, and if successful, Google could potentially integrate this feature into their Pixel wireless earbuds lineup in the future. Other brands interested in implementing this technology would need to approve its integration within their companion app software. Though the road ahead may be long, successful implementation could bring forth a relevant health tracking method, particularly beneficial for outdoor fitness activities.
