Exit Polls Signal Political Thrillers in Indian States: Congress Challenges Trends, BJP Eyes Historic Win

India - Most exit polls released on Thursday indicate tight races in several Indian states, hinting at potential political upsets. In Rajasthan, a couple of polls suggest the Congress may break a quarter-century trend of the electorate ousting the ruling party, with indications that the party is ahead in Telangana and poised to reclaim power in Chhattisgarh.

Surprisingly, exit polls suggest a potential historic landslide for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madhya Pradesh (MP), while the Zoram People’s Movement, in its debut Assembly elections, is expected to cross the majority mark in Mizoram.

Counting of votes in Telangana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram is scheduled for Sunday, marking the last round of Assembly polls before the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections in April-May.

According to exit polls by India Today-Axis and Today’s Chanakya, the BJP is predicted to return to power in MP with over 140 seats in the 230-member Assembly. This outcome is attributed to the apparent support from women due to the government’s Ladli Behna welfare scheme, depositing a monthly allowance in women's bank accounts. However, ABP-C Voter remains an outlier, indicating a Congress majority in the state.

In Rajasthan, conflicting predictions emerge, with India Today-Axis and Today’s Chanakya suggesting the Congress could be the single-largest party, while others indicate the BJP securing a comfortable majority.

In Telangana, most exit polls foresee the Congress potentially upstaging the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in a closely contested battle, ending the party's decade-long rule.

India Today-Axis predicts a Zoram People’s Movement sweep in Mizoram, whereas ABP-C Voter forecasts a hung assembly with the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and ZPM in a close race.

These exit polls add suspense to the electoral dynamics in these states, setting the stage for a keenly awaited outcome on Sunday.
