Enforcement Directorate Seeks Qatar Airways Documents in Foreign Transactions Probe
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated an investigation into Qatar Airways' foreign transactions under the Foreign Exchange Management Act. While the ED has requested documents related to the airline's financial activities, it remains uncertain if the probe is linked to alleged tax evasion. Qatar Airways is yet to respond to media queries.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has reportedly requested documents from Qatar Airways related to its foreign transactions, as part of an investigation under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act. The ED's probe, still in its early stages, is seeking information regarding the airline's financial activities.
While Qatar Airways has not responded to media inquiries, unnamed officials from the airline have acknowledged receiving the ED's request. It remains unclear whether the investigation is linked to alleged tax evasion by Qatar Airways, which was the subject of searches conducted by the director general of GST intelligence last month.
These searches were focused on potential tax evasion related to services imported from foreign carriers' head offices to Indian branches, as per GST regulations. The GST intelligence directorate had detected GST evasion of ₹57,000 crore from April 2020 to September 2023, leading to the arrest of 500 individuals. The recent ED request follows a Qatari court sentencing eight former Indian Navy personnel to death on undisclosed charges in August 2022.
