Tragic Landslide Near Gaurikund, Uttarakhand: Search and Rescue Operation Underway

A devastating landslide struck near Gaurikund on the Kedarnath yatra route in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, leaving many feared buried under the debris of shops destroyed in the calamity. The incident occurred after heavy torrential rains lashed the region, causing immense damage.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) swiftly launched a search and rescue operation to locate the missing individuals. According to an official from the Rudraprayag disaster management, it is suspected that 10 to 12 people might have been buried or swept away in the landslide.

Reports indicate that three shops were severely damaged due to the impact of falling rocks and the relentless downpour near the Gaurikund post bridge last night.

SP Rudraprayag, Dr. Visakha, stated, "The operation is going on to find the missing people."

Disaster Management Officer Dalip Singh Rajwar further explained, "We received information that three shops were affected due to falling rocks and heavy rainfall... The search operation was initiated immediately. It was reported that around 10-12 people were present, but their current whereabouts are still unknown."

The individuals who have gone missing have been identified as Vinod (26), Mulayam (25), Ashu (23), Priyanshu Chamola (18), Ranbir Singh (28), Amar Bohra, his wife Anita Bohra, their daughters, Radhika Bohra and Pinki Bohra, and sons Prithvi Bohra (7), Jatil (6), and Vakil (3), according to officials.

Gaurikund, named after Goddess Parvati, holds significant religious importance as a pilgrimage site and serves as a base camp for the revered Kedarnath Temple trek.

The ongoing monsoon season has led to a decline in the number of pilgrims visiting the Kedarnath shrine, with concerns over rain-related incidents.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts to locate and rescue those affected. The news has garnered attention from various agencies as the community hopes for the safety of the missing individuals.
