Cyclone Michaung Alert: Southern Odisha Braces for Heavy Rainfall After Andhra Pradesh Landfall
Cyclone Michaung

In the wake of severe cyclone Michaung making landfall in Andhra Pradesh, the southern districts of Odisha are on high alert due to the anticipation of heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Cyclonic 'Michaung' has now weakened into a Deep Depression over Central Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Positioned approximately 100 km north-northwest of Bapatla and 50 km southeast of Khammam, the cyclonic system is expected to lose further intensity. The IMD forecasts its transformation into a Depression within the next six hours, eventually downgrading into a well-marked low-pressure system during the subsequent six hours.

Having made landfall near Bapatla between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, Cyclone Michaung unleashed its maximum impact on Chennai and adjoining areas of Tamil Nadu on Monday. The northern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, experienced heavy rainfall leading to flooded roads and significant disruptions. Tragically, at least 17 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Chennai, prompting the closure of the airport on Monday. The runway, submerged during the storm, reopened at 9 am on Tuesday.

As the system progresses northwards, the IMD predicts isolated heavy rainfall over north coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 6. Telangana is likely to experience heavy rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall anticipated over south Chhattisgarh, south Coastal, and adjoining south Interior Odisha on the same day. The southern districts of Odisha remain on alert, expecting an increase in the intensity of rainfall.

Koraput Collector Abdaal Akhtar reassured, "At present, the situation is normal. There has been a prediction of an increase in the intensity of the downpour in the next 24 hours, and necessary precautionary measures have been taken by the administration to avoid any untoward incident."

Additionally, Chhattisgarh and the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra are expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall on the current day. The evolving situation underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and preparedness in the affected regions.
