AIIMS Identifies Mycoplasma pneumoniae in 'Walking Pneumonia' Cases: Global Concerns Rise

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has identified seven instances of Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a bacterium associated with the onset of 'Walking Pneumonia.' The cases were recorded between April and September this year and were highlighted in a study published in the Lancet Microbe journal.

Since October, 'Walking Pneumonia' cases have been reported globally, including in China. The AIIMS study revealed that one case was identified through an early-stage PCR test, while the remaining six cases were detected using the IgM Elisa test.

The Health Ministry has clarified that these seven cases are unrelated to the recent surge in respiratory infections among children, as reported in some parts of the world, including China. The Ministry emphasized that the AIIMS study, conducted from April to September 2023, is part of ongoing research and poses no cause for concern.

The Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with state health authorities. The ministry assured the public that, as part of the Indian Council of Medical Research's (ICMR) surveillance, no Mycoplasma pneumonia has been detected in 611 samples tested at AIIMS Delhi from January 2023 to date.

AIIMS Delhi is part of a global consortium monitoring Mycoplasma pneumoniae's spread, and the study notes a re-emergence of the bacterium in Europe and Asia more than three years after the introduction of COVID-19 restrictions.

'Walking Pneumonia' is described as a mild bacterial infection resembling a cold. Unlike typical pneumonia, individuals with 'Walking Pneumonia' are often well enough to continue daily activities without realizing they have pneumonia. The infection is milder and usually does not necessitate bed rest or hospitalization.

Those at higher risk of developing 'Walking Pneumonia' include individuals aged 2 or younger, those aged 65 or older, those with weakened immune systems, chronic respiratory conditions, or exposure to crowded environments. Symptoms may include sore throat, fatigue, chest discomfort, low-grade fever, chills, cough, sneezing, and headache.

'Walking Pneumonia' can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or molds (fungi). The study suggests ongoing monitoring of Mycoplasma pneumoniae's re-emergence to assess whether it will lead to increased cases or severe diseases. The progression and severity of this re-emergence remain challenging to predict.
